I don’t see specific Optional Events on the registration page. How do I sign up for them?
When registering online you can purchase credits to compete in all Optional Events by adding either Three Run Optional Events or Single Run Optional Events to your shopping cart. At this stage you are not selecting which events you will participate in, just purchasing credits that can be applied to any of the optional events during the Pin Shoot.
You can then redeem your optional event credits (provided in the form of “Davis Dough,” the official currency of the Pin Shoot) at the registration desk during the Pin Shoot.
Can I sign up for additional events once the match has started?
Yes. You can sign up for additional Main Events and Optional Events at the registration desk during the match. However, you only shoot each 5-Pin Main Event once.
On the contrary, you are allowed to shoot Optional Events as many times as you like. This is unique to the Pin Shoot and why you’ll often hear the unwritten motto muttered, “shoot till you puke!”
How do we know when it’s our turn to shoot?
The Pin Shoot runs daily from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday - Thursday and 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM on Friday. There isn't a hard stop at 5:00 but we usually close the range +/- 1 hour depending on the number of shooters. Each day at 10:00 AM we start with three single elimination Shoot Offs: OSS handgun, Master Blaster handgun, and Shotgun (currently for both classes combined). Anyone signed up for the shoot offs needs to be on the line at 10:00 AM. Your name will be called, and you’ll be given a shooting position. Once the Shoot Offs are complete, all ranges are open for Main and Optional Events for the rest of the day. On the days you wish to shoot visit the registration desk and sign up for the events you wish to shoot that day. You will be put in order on a “first come first served basis.” The only rule is that you must shoot your 5-Pin Main Events before you shoot any optional events. Unlike other matches, there are no squads, set times, or sequence of stages. Our format is very open which allows for more camaraderie throughout the week.
What is the round count for each of the events?
Each event is different. The 5-Pin Main Events are made up of six tables of 5 pins for a total round count of 30 rounds. The 9x12 event has 12 pins per table. Most (if not all) people elect to shoot this and other events in sets of 3 tables. If you do a 3-table run the round count for 9x12 would be 36 rounds. If you choose to shoot 9 tables (like many do) the round count goes to 108 rounds. Another example would be the Shotgun Event. There are 8 pins per table. Shot in sets of three tables your round count would be 24. Shoot six table and that jumps to 48 and so on.
How does the scoring system work?
In the 5-Pin Main Events you will shoot six tables of five pins. You best five times counts toward your cumulative score. For Optional Events, you are allowed to shoot them as many times as you like. Your single fastest individual time counts as your score. There are five second penalties for false starts and for striking any blue hostage pins.
Do I have to be there for the entire event, or can I just come for a day or two?
You are not required to be present for the entire event. In fact, we encourage guests to take a day and get out to explore our beautiful area of Northern Michigan. Day trips to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Mackinac Island, or several other amazing places is encouraged! We are a destination match so take advantage of it. If your time is limited and you are only able to be in the area for a day or two you are still welcome to shoot the match. We recommend a minimum of two days in order to compete in the Main Events and some Optional Events. It’s up to you to balance how much time you wish to spend and how much shooting you want to do. If you place high enough to walk the prize table and can not be there for the awards ceremony, pick someone to select a prize for you, or let our staff know and we’ll pick for you.
What are the different classes at the Pin Shoot?
There are two classes at the Pin Shoot. All shooters start out as Ordinary Standard Shooters (OSS). Accomplished competitors become Master Blasters when they earn cumulative totals of one first place finish, two second place finishes or three third place finishes as the Pin Shoot. Handgun and Long Gun events are tracked separately and competitors have the opportunity to earn Master Blaster status in each separately; Handgun Master Blaster (HGMB) or Long Gun Master Blaster (LGMB).
